Man's Best Friend Isn't Always A Good Friend!

The world of reproductions has gone so far that today we can't even trust "Man's Best Friend".  This highly collectible dog bowl has been added to the ever-growing list of pieces that are being reproduced.  Please look at the bowls below.  These photos (courtesy of Amy Musher) show the reproduction (yellow) next to the original (aqua).

Right away, you can see a difference. The aqua bowl stands a full 2-1/4" high and measures 7-1/4" from outside rim to outside rim. The fake is narrower and just ever so slightly less tall. The embossed message "Man's Best Friend His Dog" is not nearly so crisp. The shoulder rim is not quite as high and the fake simply does not have the weight of the real bowl.

Perhaps the most telling thing about the fake is the shape of the rim. I know dogs who could make a better edge than that. Take a good look. The rim gets thin (about 7 o'clock) and thick (about 2 o'clock). The beautiful uniformity on the rim of the real thing is a dead giveaway for authenticity.

And then there is the mark. Crisp, beautiful definition on the right; watered down dog chow on the left.

The fake is sold in white, blue, aqua, yellow and a most undogly pink.
