Will the REAL McCoy please stand up!

Reproductions are becoming a real problem with McCoy collectors.  Although veteran collectors will have a better idea about what is fake and what isn't, new collectors are  having a much harder time distinguishing a reproduction from a real McCoy.

A reproduction is a piece of pottery that

was made by someone other than the original manufacturer.  Reproductions are made to look just like the original piece, complete with the original markings.  Generally speaking, when a mold is made for the reproduction, an original piece is used to "shape" the new mold.  Because of the fact that clay shrinks when it dries, the molds for the reproductions (once dried) are slightly smaller than the original piece.  This causes the pieces coming OUT of the mold to be even smaller.  This size difference is SLIGHT but measurable.   However, please keep in mind that some reproductions were made from an original mold, and therefore would have no size discrepancy.

Nothing will replace educating yourself to know what items were and were NOT made by McCoy Pottery.  In an effort to help collectors identify these reproductions, we have created this site.  Please note, ONLY reproductions are shown here.  Fakes can be found on our fake site.  Information of reproduction Cookie Jars can be found at mccoycookiejars.com.  If you have any additional information on any of the pieces below, know where they are being produced,  or if you know of any additional McCoy reproductions, please

Sorry, no picture available at this time coming soon.......turtle planters!  These creatures might move slow in real life, but on ebay, there are FLYING!  A recent search found 14 reproductions!  Variations are also being made with a handle to resemble the turtle sprinklers.  More information to follow!

scottyplanter.jpg (28597 bytes) The scottie dog planter is loved my many collectors, but in December 2003, these planters joined the list of piece to be careful buying, as reproductions have become popular.  The original piece was created in the rustic glaze......a light teal/green base with a spray of brown on top.  The reproductions that have surfaced are all solid colors and as of January 2004, have been seen in yellow, teal, pink and cobalt.

heartvase.jpg (33102 bytes) The original McCoy heart vase is beautiful, and found in white (gloss and matte), pink, coral, teal and maroon.  In October, 2004, reproductions had surfaced in pink, teal, coral, line green and cobalt.  A variation of this vase, made with a handle to resemble a pitcher has also been seen.  Please note, McCoy never made a heart vase with a handle.  These are fake!

A reproduction of the NM turtle is being found all over the internet.  The colors that have been seen so far range from cobalt to white.....but so far are all glossy.  Click here for more information.

fakestrawberry.jpg (10932 bytes) This beautiful vase made by McCoy was originally produced with a rustic glaze (teal/green base with brown spray).  Reproductions have surfaced in cobalt, teal, yellow, and pink.

nuts.jpg (27666 bytes) Pictured to the left is a REAL piece of McCoy.  We do not have a photo yet of the reproduction, but know that it exists and have seen several copies on eBay auction.  VERY easy to tell the real from the fake.  The real is NOT marked, the reproduction is marked McCoy on the bottom.

fanvase.jpg (11745 bytes) We don't have much information yet, but be careful buying this piece.  It is very likely these are now being reproduced.  Be sure to MEASURE and watch for original glazes.  Remember....crazing doesn't necessarily mean it is old!  As we get more information, we will let you know.
