FAKE McCoy Bird on Cornucopia Wall Pocket

We have all see this adorable wall pocket in antique shops.  This lovely piece was made by Shawnee Pottery.   It can be seen on page 102 of Shawnee Pottery, An Identification & Value Guide, by Mangus.  It has no mark on the back.

Recently, however,  these have been popping up all over online auctions and web sites bearing the "McCoy" marking on the back.

Did McCoy ever make this piece?  No, they did not.  The pieces that are marked McCoy are fakes.  Someone used an original Shawnee piece to create a mold, and put the "McCoy" mark on the back in hopes that collectors would buy them up thinking there were McCoy.

This is simply just another case where education is a collectors best defense!

NOTE:  A special thanks to Craig Nissen, co-author of McCoy Pottery: Reference & Value Guide, Vol. I, II & III  for his help and expertise, along with the photos on this page!
